LEARNING ABOUT BRUISES
An injury to the surface of the body that does not break the skin may be sufficient to cause a braise. Bruising may result from blows with blunt objects such as clubs, a rubber hose or a whip. Braises may result from bumping into the corners of chairs or tables or from falls. The black-and-blue marks which characterize prize fighters are the results of braising with the glove. A braise of the scalp is particularly important because there may be hemorrhage under the scalp or a broken bone in the skull. Ruptures of the liver have occurred following a braise which seemed at first merely to be an injury to the surface of the body.
Some people bruise much more easily than others, because of conditions of the blood or of the capillary blood vessels, which may be fragile. Women frequently bruise easily around the time of menstruation and may not bruise easily at other times. The change in the color of bruised skin, from black to blue to yellow, is a reflection of the gradual absorption of the extravasated material by the blood. The first blood in the bruise is represented by a clot which appears black. As the pigment is absorbed, this changes to blue, to brown, to yellow, and finally disappears. A severe bruise may be painful because of the stretching of the tissues and may require application of heat and rest.
