GALL BLADDER DISEASES: CHOLECYSTITIS AND CHOLELITHIASIS
Cholecystitis and cholelithiasis are diseases of the gall bladder, a pear-shaped sac located on the lower side of the liver, from which tubes carry the bile which has come to the gall bladder from the liver. The gall bladder stores the bile and concentrates it. Anything that blocks the tubes will cause symptoms of obstruction, with pain. Infection may also attack the gall bladder. Gallstones form in the bile, and quite often block the tubes. The person with gallstones is usually said to be a woman who is fair, fat and forty years old.
Inflammation of the gall bladder is accompanied by severe pain and rigidity of the upper part of the abdomen on the right side. Jaundice may occur from absorption of bile into the blood. Severe attacks demand surgical operation, with removal of the gall bladder. These operations are not considered dangerous under modern conditions, with good surgery and the use of antibiotic drugs.
Gallstones are detected by the use of dye substances such as iodophthalein, which when taken into the body either by mouth or by injection goes to the liver and is passed with the bile into the gall bladder. Then an X-ray picture will show the presence of the stones in the gall bladder.
The symptoms of gall bladder disease and inflammation with or without gallstones include a sense of fullness, which comes on usually after eating and is worse when greasy or fatty foods are eaten. Associated with the sense of fullness may be a dull aching pain below the ribs, aggravated by stooping over. Heartburn is quite common in such conditions. Jaundice is not necessarily a symptom unless there is blocking of the flow of bile. Many people live for years and have rather good health with chronic diseases of the gall bladder - particularly if they avoid large meals and heavy or fatty foods. But the threat of a serious complication is always present.
