UNDERSTANDING EDEMA
Edema is an excessive accumulation of fluid in the tissue spaces; from the Greek word meaning "swelling." The terms dropsy and ascites are interchangeable. When the swelling is due to failure of the heart, the condition is called cardiac edema. Swelling caused by fluid in the brain is edema of the brain, and this may be related to toxic causes or to vitamin deficiencies, particularly deficiency of protein and thiamin. Swelling of the hands and feet occurs during hot weather, due to increased volume of the blood and dilation of the capillary blood vessels. This is called heat edema, and is mild. The people in countries that are starving, who develop swelling due to fluid, are said to have nutritional edema.
The prevention and treatment of edema depends on diagnosis of the cause; the treatment is given to eliminate fluid and to prevent its collecting again. The symptom is serious, and a proper diagnosis is of great importance to afford prompt relief. Fluid in the legs disappears when the person rests elevating the legs. Sometimes failure of the heart is helped by a proper posture. Several drugs are known which aid in eliminating fluid, but correction of the cause is more important than a quick elimination of the fluid.
