USE OF ENEMA
Enema is an injection through the rectum into the bowel. Enemas may be used to diagnose diseases, to give nutrition when it is impossible to give it through the stomach, and for the treatment of a variety of conditions. High enemas are injected higher up in the bowel through special equipment. For small babies, enemas are given through a pear-shaped, soft, rubber-tipped ear syringe. For little babies soft rubber tips are safer. Such syringes hold a wine glass of fluid, which can be injected without causing pain or injury. For adults the ordinary fountain syringe is used. Make sure that it is clean, and that the tips are boiled before being used on other people. The ordinary enemas contain plain water, mixtures of soap and water, glycerine and water, soap suds and salts, or other materials. If the enema is planned merely to empty the lower part of the bowel, a pint of fluid injected rapidly will do the work. If a complete cleaning of the bowel is desirable, one or two quarts of water (preferably warm) may be introduced, with the patient either lying on his side or kneeling with the chest touching the bed.
