PAYING ATTENTION TO YOUR FEET
Painful, sweating and itching feet are annoying; crippled and deformed feet are incapacitating. When the doctor examines your feet he looks first for signs of pain or swelling; discoloration, as results from bruising or hemorrhage, points to some trouble. If the feet ache during the night or if pain begins early in the morning, the symptom is important. If swelling disappears after rest, the difficulty may be constitutional rather than related to the feet. People who stand long hours are most likely to be disturbed by painful feet, due to pressure on the arch of the foot.
Hygiene of the Feet
The feet should be bathed at least once daily, preferably with soap, and afterwards dusted with a simple powder. This helps to prevent ringworm, which thrives on moisture between the toes and on the feet. To aid circulation, the feet may be dipped alternately for a few minutes at a time in hot water and then in cold water. Among the troubles that can happen to a foot are: sprains, strains, dislocations, fractures, excessive sweating, corns, calluses, warts, chilblains, ringworm, bunions, hammertoes, painful heels, ingrown toenails, cracked toes, blisters, bruises, and disturbances of the circulation. These are discussed to some extent under the appropriate headings.
The shoe should have the shape of the foot and should fit the foot. The stockings should be right in size, so as to be free from wrinkles or pressures. Tight stockings tend to cause the toes to turn in, and may be a cause of ingrown toenails.
Corns, like calluses, are due to rubbing; this may be rubbing by the shoe or by the stocking. Simple corns may be removed by cutting away with a sharp knife. For serious corns, particularly between the toes, surgical procedures may be necessary to remove the spurs or bone that causes pressure. Soft corns usually occur on the inside of the little toe where the joint projects against the inside of the fourth toe.
Bunions usually occur on the outer side of the large toe. Occasionally they occur on the middle of the foot, due to the modern practice of lacing shoes tightly.
