ANTITOXIN
Among the antibodies that are developed in the blood are the antitoxins, which act specifically against poisons from various germs. Antibodies may include those that agglutinate the germs, those that dissolve them or those that precipitate them. The antibodies are usually associated with the gamma globulin, about which so much has been heard, as a container for the anti-substances against measles, hepatitis and infantile paralysis. Antitoxins are sometimes prepared by injecting germs into animals such as the horse; the horse then develops in its serum the antitoxic substances. The antitoxins now recognized as among the most useful in medicine include those against botulism, diphtheria, lockjaw, scarlet fever, snake bite, and staphylococcus infections. Antitoxins have also been tried in erysipelas, epidemic sore throat, and meningitis. The developments in modern antibiotic drugs like penicillin, terramycin, aureomycin and chloromycetin are so effective that in many instances antitoxins are used only for severe and resistant cases. Scarlet fever antitoxin was greatly used but is now never used in such conditions, until antibiotics seem to fail.
