Drug Medical Information

BLADDER DISEASES

Bladder diseases are diseases affecting the two chief bladders in the body, the gall bladder and the urinary bladder. The gall bladder conditions are discussed under cholecystitis.
Two tubes called ureters pass from the kidneys a distance of about a foot and carry the urine to the urinary bladder. This is an elastic storage receptacle which is emptied from time to time. It has an average capacity of something less than a pint but can stretch considerably when the flow of urine out of the bladder is subjected to interference. Inflammation of the bladder follows infections which result from contamination by various germs. Among the chief ones that affect the bladder are the colon bacilli, but almost any type of germ can upon occasion infect and inflame the bladder. Inflammation of the bladder is called cystitis. Old people or those who remain in bed practically all the time are more likely to have such conditions than those who are active. Enlargement of the prostate gland in men interferes with the flow of urine from the bladder and thus aids contamination and infection. Many tests are used by doctors in diagnosing such conditions. These include looking into the bladder with a cystoscope; feeling the prostate gland with a finger placed in the rectum; using dye substances that are excreted by the kidneys; giving the patient substances which are opaque to the X-ray, then taking X-ray pictures. Many methods have been developed for treating inflammation and infection of the bladder and there are now drugs such as the sulfonamides, the furadantin derivatives, the antibiotics, and mandelic acid, which act to control such infections.
Stones may form in the urinary bladder itself or may get there from the kidney by passing down the ureters. Stones in the urinary bladder occur about twenty times as often among men as among women. If the stone causes symptoms by blocking the flow of urine, it should be removed with the instruments which doctors have for this purpose.
A tumor of the bladder may be exceedingly serious because it causes bleeding, difficulties in urinating and other disturbances. By the use of the cystoscope for looking into the bladder and the X-ray for detecting changes in the bladder, diagnosis may be made certain, and with modern techniques, treatment and cure are possible.
