BRAIN INFLAMMATION: ENCEPHALITIS
Inflammation of the brain may accompany various infections as, for example, measles; or it may be a distinct disease caused by a virus; or may be associated with such conditions as meningitis or paralysis agitans. Some types of "encephalitis" have been named after the area in which they occurred, as for instance Japanese encephalitis or St. Louis encephalitis. The infection of the brain begins, like other infections, with fever, headache, dizziness, and pains in the trunk and limbs. Vomiting and hiccups may be early symptoms, also disturbances of vision like double vision, and lethargy or sleepiness. The most serious effect of encephalitis is the permanent changes that may occur in the nervous system, resulting eventually in the shaking palsy, involuntary movements, and in paralysis, sometimes in deterioration in intelligence and behavior. The death rate from encephalitis may be exceedingly high, as anything that injures the brain carries with it great danger. Physicians are working on vaccines against encephalitis and also studying a variety of antibiotic drugs, with a view to controlling the infection.
