BREATHING FOR HUMAN BEING

The lungs conduct the breathing of the body. Air is taken into the lungs, which take the oxygen out of the air and release carbon dioxide. The lungs are like a sponge organized into little individual cells which communicate with larger tubes and these with still larger tubes, passing them from the air spaces to the bronchial tubes and then into the trachea, or windpipe. The air changes in the lungs at about the rate of four quarts per minute. The average human being breathes from twelve to fifteen times per minute. We breathe more rapidly when we exercise because then we need more oxygen. The capacity of the chest differs in different people, also the ability to hold the breath. Shortness of the breath is a serious symptom, sometimes related to heart disease, on other occasions to deficiencies in the blood. From the small cells of the lungs the air passes into small tubes which carry it to the windpipe. These tubes are called bronchi. Inflammation of or around these tubes causes distressing cough and expectoration of material. Breathing becomes difficult. Obviously, it is important to get the infected material out of the body. When detected early, the use of an antibiotic drug will stop the infection. Other remedies are given to lessen the cough. Inhalations of steam will loosen the material and permit it to be expectorated more easily. Great care must be taken not to burn the patient by tipping over the kettle or basin which is creating the steam. The chief danger from bronchitis is secondary pneumonia. Children who have had bronchitis after measles or other infectious diseases may improve greatly in sunny climates. Rest, fresh air, sunshine and nutritious food will help build the body and create increased resistance. A persistent cough means there is continuing infection. Chronic bronchitis produces constant coughing, which may be noticed particularly during the night.
Bronchiectasis is an infection in the lungs and must be relieved by resting the lungs; sometimes such infections become so serious and damaging that surgical removal of a portion of the lung is necessary. People with bronchiectasis are helped by plenty of rest. Drainage is encouraged by allowing the head to lean over the edge of the bed or by bending it over a chair. Nowadays inhalations of antibiotic drugs are given. A device has been developed to encourage coughing and thus to permit the lung to eliminate infectious material more easily.
