Drug Medical Information
HUMAN BODY: EYE - ORGAN OF VISION
The eye is the organ of vision. Some of its parts are: the retina (the sensitive tissue at the back of the eye, which receives the image formed by the lens and is connected with the brain by the optic nerve); the optic nerve; the lens; the pupil (the opening in the iris, which contracts or dilates in reaction to light or drugs); the iris (the colored part of the eye; its color is determined by heredity); the conjunctiva (the outer covering of the eye).
The eyes are in almost constant use from the moment of birth until that of death except for the hours spent in sleeping, and should receive meticulous care. Upon entering school, children should have an eye examination and any visual defects should be corrected. Anyone of any age exhibiting such signs of visual difficulty as a habit of keeping the eyelids slightly closed, a tendency to bend too close to his work or to twist his body in order to see better, or anyone who experiences blind spots or extraordinary flashes of light should also have an eye examination. Blocking of the tear ducts is a serious condition, since the eye will run over with fluid. Treatment of this condition demands the attention of a specialist.
Here are a few simple rules to help guard eyesight:
1. Be sure the light is good when reading or doing close work. Do not face glare or extreme brightness.
2. Never wipe the eyes with a towel used by others.
3. Be sure there are no hooks, doorstops, or other projections on walls at the level of adults' or children's eyes.
Some disturbances of the eye are secondary effects of disease in other parts of the body - for example, jaundice, anemia, brain tumor, diabetes, streptococcal infection, syphilis. In such cases clearing up of the condition depends on successful treatment of the primary cause.
Other difficulties are due to disorders of the eye itself. Among these are astigmatism, cataracts, color blindness, conjunctivitis, cross-eyes, glaucoma, myopia ("near-sightedness"). These are discussed under separate headings.
Care should be taken to protect the eyes of workers in industries which, by their nature, present hazards to eyesight - e.g., ultraviolet rays in arc welding; industrial poisons; flying fragments of metals, stone, and grit; caustic substances such as lime or acids. Employers should provide exhaust fans, protective goggles, safety devices on machines, and facilities for frequent washing of the hands.
Here are some hints for first aid for eye injuries:
1. Bathe the eye with a suitable mild sterile solution, preferably a weak solution of boric acid in sterilized water.
2. Cover the eye with a sterile bandage moistened with the above solution.
3. Consult an eye doctor immediately.
Warning: Under no circumstances should an untrained person attempt to remove any foreign substance from the eye.
