CEREBRAL PALSY

A condition which results from a defect in the brain usually following a hemorrhage during childbirth and is a situation that is not amenable to any kind of radical cure. In the International Congress on Pediatrics held in Copenhagen in July 1956 authorities reviewed the present status of our knowledge regarding cerebral palsy and what can be done for it. Such children are helped by training, by orthopedic surgery and by psychological studies leading to making the most of what they have. When cerebral palsy is accompanied by deviations, defects of sensation, or convulsions, procedures are necessary to overcome these difficulties. Sometimes during growth developmental changes take place which lead to improvement in the capacity of the child. This improvement is sometimes erroneously ascribed to the treatment that happens to be given at the time. Careful study of each case enables the physician to know what the primary disturbances are and to determine what is best done for improvement.
Psychiatrists have discovered that the motor defects which such children have influence their entire personality and development. Such children become objects of anxiety rather than joy to their parents. As a result the children fail to learn many of the things which other children do. They hear language about them referring to things or actions which they have never seen or experienced and thus their development is hindered. Defects of hearing may be found; visual defects, ability to feel or perceive may be greatly hampered, and all of this interferes with development. However, much help can be given when these conditions are determined. The authorities believe that long-time planning for cerebral palsy must change from exclusive emphasis on defects of motion to greater consideration of what can be accomplished by training and to greater interest in supplying emotional and sensory experiences out of which stability and knowledge may arise. Direct operation on the brain is not recommended except for intolerable convulsions. Neither does any drug treatment seem to be useful except for control of convulsions.
