HEARING DISORDERS: DEAFNESS
Deafness is a loss or impairment of the sense of hearing. Within the internal ear is a special mechanism which picks up vibrations from the eardrum and transmits them to the small bones in contact with the eardrum which is in the middle ear to the hearing mechanism in the internal ear. Any infection that destroys tissues or inflames any portion of this mechanism will produce hardness of hearing. Most dangerous are the infectious diseases like measles, meningitis, scarlet fever, and the streptococcus infections, also the infections of the adenoids and tonsils, colds in the head and sinuses.
From the throat or back of the nose there passes to the ear a tube known as the Eustachian tube. This is also concerned with good hearing. Inflammation or blocking of the Eustachian tube will interfere with hearing.
Deafness or impaired hearing may result from accidents like a blow on the head, from rupture of the eardrum, from a foreign substance getting into the ear and blocking the transmission of sound to the eardrum. Certain diseases definitely damage the nerve that is responsible for conveying stimulation from the internal ear to the brain. Damage to this nerve will produce permanent deafness. As people grow older, there sometimes comes on a condition of progressive loss of hearing, which may be due to inflammations that harden the connections between the tissues involved in hearing. This disease is called otosclerosis.
Devices have been invented for measuring loss of hearing and helping the doctor to detect the nature of the condition responsible. Nowadays hearing aids have been developed of two types - those which act by air conduction and those which act by bone conduction. The specialist can determine the nature of the loss of hearing and thus prescribe the device best suited to the condition.
In a new operation called fenestration, a window is made into the internal ear, and by this technique many cases of what seemed to be permanent deafness have been cured.
